  2. As for climate change initiatives, I have been impressed with the direct air capture pilot plant work done by Carbon Engineering. [Click] They take carbon dioxide out of the air using renewable energy using off the shelf equipment, and transform it into liquid fuel (gasoline and diesel) using the very well known Fischer-Tropsch process. It shows promise of being competitive with petroleum based fuels, and is likely practical to set up on a distributed basis. That would take advantage of the existing liquid fuels infrastructure and our very advanced internal combustion engine technology. Granted that it is as yet only carbon-neutral rather than carbon-negative, it is a step in the right direction. The engineer in me is impressed. I think they are looking for a place to build a small commercial plant.

Elizabeth Warren ups the ante. [Click] She forswears (e.g.) $30,000 per plate dinners—which I always thought stunk. I may not be the only one.

Bernie Sanders’ Staffers Want Him to Be Less Grumpy [Click] Let’s not overdo it!

Question for listener: Where is Standard, Vermont? The story says that was where Bernie first lived in Vermont, and Peter Welch tells in the article of visiting there with him during his 2006 Senate campaign. Neither Google Maps nor Wikipedia knows where it is! It sounds even more remote than the hamlet I am originally from.

    2. In Warren's email she come out against all "big donors" -- defined as anyone who contributes more than $200 total. That tells me where I stand with her.

    3. Alan, there is no place called Standard, Vermont. LOL! That is an error in the article. I'm sure the journalist meant Stannard, Vermont. If you type "Stannard" autINcorrect switches it to "Standard." Stannard is up toward the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont.

    4. Just to add, regarding that article, that people keep characterising Bernie as some kind of grumpy guy. He really really isn't! Bernie may seem that way beside the schmoozers, but what Bernie actually is, is honest. He doesn't suffer fools gladly, and he sure has seen a lot of fools lately. But I can tell you from personal experience what Bernie is like. Sometime around 2008 or 2010, I went to hear my Senator speak one town away from me, at the Town Hall in Underhill, Vermont. Afterward, I went over to Bernie to ask his support for the National Nurse bill. And do you know what? Bernie took my hand and listened to me. You wouldn't have thought anyone else was in the room. He listened and the whole time he was listening to me, he held onto my hand. I remember his hand as warm and his response as gentle, kind and even grateful for the work of the National Nurse team. Bernie is a great friend of nurses and healthcare. He is a stellar Senator for Vermonters. And we really hope that this time, if the nation is going to take his time and energy, that this time the nation chooses him. Because, really, between Howard and Bernie, we've given up a lot over the last 15 years, eh?

    5. Aha! So I was misled by another marvel of modern technology, eh? A bigger place than where I come from, but not a bad size at all. And to tell the truth, I think that stuff about Bernie being grumpy is just projecting on him a standard prejudice about old men--that they are "grumpy." Just as bad as saying women are "hysterical" or fat people are "jolly."

    1. Darned if I can locate the story, but yesterday I saw some data correlating presidential approval with public opinion of the economy. Traditionally they have been positively correlated (albeit with a lot of scatter), but starting with Obama and becoming more pronounced under DT, there has been no correlation. The writer posited that presidential approval seems to be a matter of partisanship rather than economic performance. I take that as a clear indication that the way to victory is through expanding and turning out the base [may I call it the Stacey Abrams strategy?] rather than trying to sway voters from the opposing party.

  7. The End of Recycling [Click] The technology to deal with this exists and has a long history: the Fisher-Tropsch process. [Click] Recycling paper and plastic waste to make liquid fuels and lubricants can depress demand for petroleum.

  8. Aha! It occurred to me to wonder how tall Bernie is, and they say he is six feet tall, maybe taller if he stands up straight. Then I wondered about Elizabeth Warren: FIVE FEET EIGHT INCHES! One of my kind, like Ulysses Grant! Another reason to vote for her!

    1. Home from the polls! Great day!! I got to open Absentee Ballots and prep them for feeding into the counting machine. Then I got to be Ballot Handler!! If that isn't a cool title, I don't know what is. πŸ˜‚The job didn't come with a leash or whip, but it was fun handing out all the ballots! 😊
