  1. Susan--replies on previous thread. And here's something from the Washington Post:

P.S.: If you have used up your free articles for the month at the WaPo (or NYT, for that matter) you can probably reset the counter by using another browser. I have a secure browser that was only available for a short time, and that works pretty well, too.

  2. Rats--I let wishful thinking run away with me; thought I only had two more weeks at work, and it turns out to be three!

  3. Re the photo--I suppose those stones are ones that were left by glaciers, and were subsequently heaved by frost. In some places I have lived they would be volcanic bombs. Good for making fences or walls either way, I suppose.

    1. The irony of this special election is that, with gerrymandering gone in 2018, this district will no longer exists. whoever wins will be thrown into a district with an established incumbent.

  5. This really frosts my cookie! Just today I got three panic-stricken emails with "Oh NOes!" and practically SAYING Conor Lamb will lose if you don't donate NOW. I don't know who handles fundraising emails or if it's always the same company, but this happened with Doug Jones and John Ossof too. I keep emailing them back and telling them that raising people's anxiety in the currently fraught era we live in is a really bad idea. I also tell them that I will not donate to people who use such tactics on me, but they never stop. And NOW to find out that the DCCC gave $450,000 but try to make little old granny me feel terrible, or as if his winning depends on my little donations. Well, if I could see them in person and punch them right in the gut I would.

    1. In a word: UNSUBSCRIBE.

But if you see them, aim a little lower.

    2. The flip side is the email that says, "Polls show Lamb (or whoever) ahead! Contribute to put him/her over the top! (The email you post below is a slightly more restrained version of this.) I recognize that all these, as well as "Sign the Petition" and "Take this survey" are simply attempts to get money. And I largely ignore all of these in deciding how much to give to whom.

  6. Cheetolini's crazed speech probably gave a good boost to Lamb.

    1. Which reminds me of the rumor floating around that SD is saying he likes dominatices. When I heard that I immediately wondered if that explains his attraction to men like Putin, Duterte, and for that matter, Kim Jon Un. Uncharitable of me, wot?

  7. So, I just opened up my email again and got this:

    "This is it, Susan.

Now that we’re just hours away from polls opening in Southwestern Pennsylvania, I wanted to take a minute to say thank you for everything you’ve done in these weeks and months that have us with a real shot to win Tuesday's special election.

We’ve only gotten this far because of the hard work that grassroots supporters like you are doing.

Let’s stay focused and not leave anything to chance, can you dig in one more time and chip in $5 tonight to make sure that our final GOTV push has the resources to turn out the vote we need?"

    1. Well done, Susan!! Sound like you single-handedly saved the day! Quick, it's up to you to take them to the finish line. All it takes is $5 more. Wow!

      Egads.

Get off their mailing list. It's the only way. CALL their office and ask to speak to someone who can do data entry who can get into the file with your name on it and check the box that says Unsubscribe, or uncheck the box that keeps you on their email list. Tell them why you need this done. Tell them too that you won't be able to give any more until Congress secures Social Security.

  8. If they send you a letter with a postage-paid donation envelope, send it back to them without a stamp. No need to vent one's spleen, just cost them a bit of money every time. If there is some sort of identifier for you, in time they will figure out it is not cost effective. Takes a long time, though.
