vaLENTine

LOL!  I'm so glad my tradition doesn't highlight giving up some innocuous thing like chocolate, but suggests I do something harder like choosing joy instead of complaining, or sleeping more to be more healthy, or simply facing the ways I do harm and seeking to be more loving.  Wil and I are going to "get smudged" then go out for lunch.  We'll watch a good movie in the evening.  Sweet.

  2. I was just looking over the day’s news while having dinner. Merciful heavens. Now back to work.

  3. ❤️ Best Valentine's Day! ❤️

Not only did Wil and I get smudged, we also got to have lunch together.

But first, Youngest posted a video of 4 year old Grandson and 2 year old Granddaughter learning the news that they will be joined this Summer by a new sibling!! ADORABLE!!

Plus, Wil came home from work bearing a truly heartwarming card and a live mini-roses plant (red)!!
I made him a special card, and made a fancy dinner.

Then we watched Sleepless in Seattle. Lovely. ❤️❤️

  4. Listener, while I agree that positive choices such as you describe are important and valuable, at the same time there are some of us for whom giving up chocolate is very difficult and represents a struggle of will. I long ago recognized that I cannot manage forty days without chocolate, whether in solid form or as cocoa. This year I'm giving up coffee and ice cream, which I foresee as being quite enough of a struggle. I am implementing, or trying to implement, positive choices and behaviors as well, but since I'm very nearly as emotionally dependent on coffee and ice cream - especially ice cream - as on chocolate, I foresee a difficult month and a half. And that, of course, is the point, penance and self-discipline.

    1. That's fine, too, Cat, as long as it's a choice that's good for you.

I was suggesting that the usual "giving up something" doesn't work for everyone, as a spiritual practice. My favourite book for Lent is called "Choosing Joy for Lent." What a concept, eh?

  7. I've seen posts where people say, "Pray for Florida."
We also need more than prayers. We need action. We need changes made in this nation that protect the lives of children. Adults should have to give a little for the safety of the children in this nation. After all, we get to vote and they do not.
No one needs a weapon of war to hunt or protect themselves. There is NO good reason for an average citizen to have an assault rifle!
Plus, it's a fact that nations which have banned assault rifles have few if any mass shootings. That alone is reason enough.

    2. Seems to me prayer without action (where action is possible) is much like faith without works -empty.

The NRA must be removed as a political force. After all, it wasn't always one.

The assault weapons ban must be re instituted.

That much is obvious. Less obvious, to me anyway, is how to do these things.

  8. If you will pardon my cynicism, I recall when prayers, condolences (I'm looking at YOU, Donald) and a dime would buy a cup of coffee. Nowadays it's prayers, condolences and two dollars (more at Starbucks). I'm pretty tired, so take that into consideration.
