  1. Hmmmm…..Anybody ready for a wave?

Spooky parallels with 2009, but now the shoe is on the other foot. [Click] "Mr. Van Hollen said one difference he saw between the two election cycles was that Republicans suffered deeper losses up and down the ballot in off-year elections this month than Democrats did in 2009."

  2. Historically, men translated the Odyssey. Here’s what happened when a woman took the job. [Click] “Tell me about a complicated man.” So begins Emily Wilson’s new translation, which reveals how the ancient story is relevant today.

    2. I noticed it in the sidebar to the young Obama speechwriter's story you posted. The difficulties in translation even among closely related modern languages are nothing to be sniffed at; with an ancient language spoken in a very different society, they must be tremendous. Some things can be translated directly, word for word, and others cannot--they must be interpreted. One example that comes to mind because of current affairs is the dedication on the frieze of the Reichstag: "Dem deutschen Volke. Translated word for word, as one might do with a dictionary, it comes out "The German People." Because German remains far more highly inflected than English, it really means "To the German People," clearly meaning that the parliament was a gift of the emperor to the people. BTW, I really admire how they renovated the building.

    3. I may have to read that, Alan. Thanks.

Currently reading/rereading Christopher Tolkien's monumental work with his father's papers. Last year he published what he says will probably be his last book. After some forty years, and having just celebrated his ninety-third birthday earlier this week, I think he richly deserves to retire. I want to write to him. Must make sure of Houghton Mifflin's address. Don't want my letter to go astray.

'Women are pissed': Trump rage turns to action – and surge in female candidates[Click] Darned if this doesn’t look like one of those times when generalized social revulsion gets into the driver’s seat—like the revulsion against cocaine and marijuana about a century ago. Or maybe the rise of the Populist Party fifty years before that.
