Dave the Treadle Guy

Dave the Treadle Guy was here last Wednesday and pronounced Blossom in beautiful running order!  Pretty amazing that he lives just a two minute walk away. He lubricated everything, put in a new needle and gave me some excellent sewing machine oil to have on hand as needed. It looks like I'll have something fun to do this Winter!

  1. Nice! The Singer treadle sewing machines I remember had the Singer brand name in the pattern of the treadle. Am I correct to assume the sewing machine is lifted out of the desk top (after removing the belt, natch) and stowed above the treadle?

  2. Nope. There's a hinge on the back of the machine. You push it a little back and up, and the wood piece just int front of it lifts, and you drop the machine into the desk. Put the small piece back as before, and close the wing on the left over the hole.

    1. I am AMAZED that I got this machine at all! I found it on Craigslist, and had never seen one with a cabinet. I got it for something like $75 or $100, and the person who had it before me was a seamstress!! Dave the Treadle Guy says that many Singers that sat unused a long time seized up because people had used the wrong sort of oil (WD40 instead of sewing machine oil!) and it congealed. However, though this was used minimally, it had all the right stuff, and the seamstress treated it well. I'm like a kid in a candy store!!

  4. Much fancier cabinetry and decor than the machine my mother had, but clearly the same type of machine.

  5. My mom's electric Singer was in a rather heavy tabletop base, and had a wooden cover with a carrying handle. Originally it had a lever speed control that was moved by the right knee, but she had it modified to use a foot speed control. Like this one.[Click]

  6. Alan, I think yours was a later model than mine. Mine was built in 1924 and doesn't even sew backwards. (I hope that helps your machine envy, Susan!)

    1. I don't know when my mother got her Singer, but it had to be after 1932 (when my folks were married). I think they would have had enough money by 1940, when my brother was born. I am not sure when they bought their first house, but it would have been around 1940. So probably from the late 1930's. I never learned how to use a sewing machine, although I am handy enough with needle and thread to meet the minimum needs of a bachelor. My mother saw to that before I went away to college, and gave me a small sewing kit that I still have (in a small cigar box).

Bannon was VP and Sec for that analytics group until a month after Trump made his famous appeal to Russia to find the emails.
