Some Rain Must Fall

  1. It will be some time before I can furnish a drawing for the blog, but thank you, listener. I need something to do in retirement (my Sacred Harp idea is kaput), and when I saw this sort of pen and watercolor work[Click] I was quite taken with it. After several days’ reflection I became conscious of the reason—an experience in eighth grade that has been eating at me for the intervening fifty-six years. In art class one day we were given paper, brushes and watercolor inks and told to make a picture, with no instruction to speak of. The result was of course disastrous, and helped to convince me that I was hopelessly incompetent at art; the idea that I had not received adequate instruction did not occur to me. Well, I think the time to excise that particular demon is upon me, or nearly so. The gal whose work I link to above has only been at it for ten years, and I may well be kicking at least that long.

P.S.: There are several fires burning in the mountains both the east and the west, as well as brush and grassland fires; one can smell the smoke a bit, and it is causing air quality problems.

    1. Alan, I applaud you doing your unique art your way, at your own pace. Did you know that when educator John Holt learned he had cancer, when he got to a point where continued treatment would not bring a great outcome, he simply stopped treatment and ... took up the violin for the first time in his life...? He had always wanted to play, and very much enjoyed it for the rest of his life.

But what became of Sacred Harp?

I've been hearing about the fires and I always feel concern for my friends in California. Please keep us posted.

  3. "Some rain must fall" sounds ironic in the Chicago area. Over the 40 or so hours after I got home we had a series of thunderstorms that flooded streets and basements, especially in the northern part of the metro area (not so much in Oak Park, which is on what constitutes relatively high ground around here). And Oak Park has felt more oppressively hot and humid than San Juan did.

  5. Bill, yeah, we've had flooding here too. Lots of water this season, that's for sure, and definitely uncomfortable humidity. Let me know when it breaks. It comes here after there. 🙂
