    1. [shaking head] Eliminate blindness? Extreme hyperbole, to say the least. Cat's blindness has nothing to do with her eyes and there is nothing in the article to suggest a way to put normal cells in my retina where currently there are none. His devices may be useful for some eye diseaes. But ALL of them? No way!

Incidentally, I'm using Google Chrome at this point. I think the problem signing in as Bill Thomasson had more to do with IE than blogspot. But Chrome insists on overriding my computer settings to display things in low-contrast gray on white. Hard to read. You'll probably be seeing me as anonymous from now on.

    2. I toyed with Chrome for a while, spent some time at the Chrome boards--ended up NOT liking their attitude: this may not be what people want but they'll *learn to like it* (because we're not going to change it!).

    3. Sounds very Google. When they took over and, more importantly, totally overhauled (and IMO ruined) YouTube, there was a great deal of activity on the help forum, all of it negative. Google's response as I recall was basically to tell us to shut up and put up. I came very close to moving to Daily Motion. Some people actually did announce they were closing not just their YouTube account but their entire Google account.. Having subscribers, I didn't feel that was a viable option for me, but, man, I wanted to!

    4. Aw, Bill, DRAT. I knew you'd tell us if it were too good to be true. I'm truly sorry it is.

  3. listener--

Oh! A new library COMPUTER system! I wondered if the new system might be a willow switch for those returning books late, rather than a fine, or… well, the mind bobbles [a typo, but it looks interesting, no?] to think of what the new system might be… [grin]

Glad if the recipes I sent might be of some use; no thanks necessary. Mincemeat muffins sound real good to me--haven't made any in years and years. Saw some mincemeat in the store today. Well, first things first; I got back on the weight-loss wagon again; maybe by the end of the year I will reach my objective minimum weight.

Odd, and not promising, things going on at my primary job; I am beginning to wonder if the company will pull through or not. I'd really and truly hate to see it fail, not only for my sake but because we serve an important social purpose. But should worse come to worst, I have a pair of lifeboat jobs that should take care of our personal needs. Fingers crossed…

    1. Cleaning out my mother's pantry after her death we found four bottles of mincemeat. Made by the same company, but purchased so far apart in time the each label was different from all the others. We tossed 'em all. . . .

    2. Re: weight loss. Over the past couple of years I have lost 6-7 pounds simply by watching snacks and deserts. As expected, I put on about 5 lbs during my recent trip, but my experience validates the meme "easy on, easy off." Indeed, my scale showed a pound less today than yesterday.

    3. Alan, pretty funny about the willow switch! No, we aren't a Calvin-and-Hobbes-style library at all. We don't even have fines! (That's because our budget comes from town taxes from the two towns we serve.) It's more than getting new computers, it's also new computer software. So everything we do…every screen…will look completely different than what we're used to. I am going to make a sign that reads: "Please be patient until our new computer system gets used to us."

    4. My doc says to lose weight fast, eliminate cheese. But…but…this is a DAIRY state I'm living in!!

Alan, thanks again for the recipes! I love the way things are explained in old cookbooks. The funny thing is that when I finally had chance to take a good look at what you sent, on my computer, I saw that the pages are mostly from a cookbook I used to own! Ha! "Recipes for a Small Planet" was a great help to me, along with The New York Times Natural Foods Cookbook and Mother's in the Kitchen (from La Leche League). LLL's more recent edition was titled Whole Foods for the Whole Family…which title made me smile. It was good to know Mom got to get out of the kitchen sometimes! :-)

  4. Howard would be first this fine cool rainy autumn day!

It appears, according to my email from the ACLU that WV was included in that last Supreme non-ruling, and thusly, gay peeps may now be married here. Thanks Howard!

  5. Not on the computer much these past few days 'cause I'm on a decluttering binge. I reached saturation point and had to start sending things to live elsewhere. My Son #2 came downstairs and looked at the empty spaces in the living room. After a few minutes he said, "So. Were we robbed?"

    1. I hope to find time to declutter my office sometime. Just my office, because the clutter in the rest of the house is almost all Penny's. Wouldn't dare touch it.

  6. Alan, what's more, the week after we begin using the new computers and software, we are closing that week to install more shelving, then we need to move almost all the books in the library. So, when we reopen at the start of November, we not only won't know how to properly work the computers, we won't know where anything is! Ha! It's going to be CHAOS for awhile. Some of the staff is kind of freaking out, but I think we may as well have fun with it. But then, I'm mostly at peace with things that are out of my control. (Except mean things that cannot be contained…like conservative Republicans. No peace for them! Ha!)

  7. Beautiful photo for yesterday.

Vivvie is here, not doing so well but not spectacularly badly either. She mostly eats well, but doesn't put on any weight. There is pretty much endless debate over whether to take her to the vet for various tests and procedures. Sis and I maintain the stress of all that would be too much for her. Truly though, it's so hard to know what is right to do.

Cecilia is adorable. She had a bit of an outing today to other parts of the house and she was introduced to another kitty. She was not shy about expressing her opinion about it all. *grin*

The tranfer phonograph works well. It will take me a while to get the complete hang, but all bodes well.

  8. Amazon review of my mother's brand. . . .

I love mincemeat. My grandmother made mincemeat. I make it now myself. This is not mincemeat. This is disgusting.

Here are the ingredients in Crosse & Blackwell's "mincement," in order of volume, according to the label: apples, high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, raisins, water, vinegar, corn starch, and then trace elements of orange peel, salt, spices, caramel color, orange juice, and preservatives. (As an aside, what on earth is the purpose of that orange juice, which exists in smaller quantity than the caramel color? )

In other words, this concoction is apples, drenched in high-fructose corn syrup and regular corn syrup, with a few raisins. Lord knows what the "spices" were, because they could scarcely be distinguished under the sickly aftertaste of corn syrup.

Here are the ingredients from a recipe for real mincemeat, again in order of volume: apples, raisins, beef (for those who like it), sultanas, currents, sour cherries, citrons, sugar, strawberry preserves, apricot preserves, orange peel, lemon peel, spices (cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, mace, allspice), salt. This mixture is marinated in liquor - rum, brandy, sherry, apple jack, or whatever additional or alternative liquor you may enjoy. Our family's recipe calls for these things; other people use different fruits, most omit the meat, some use juice and vinegar instead of liquor. But the result, in any case, is rich, spicy, complex and delicious.

Or, if you prefer, you may have Crosse & Blackwell's canned apples with high-fructose corn syrup.
