  3. Just had my tea: A Starbuck's vanilla latte, an English muffin and, in lieu of jam, a small bunch of pink grapes. Nice tea. Have I mentioned I really love my Starbuck's?

  4. Here's a quiz I found this afternoon, The Strange World of Collective Nouns. Some of them are delightful. My favorite is the one for Teddy bears.

  5. While poking around the Internet looking for a California High Speed Rail bumper sticker, I happened across
THIS [Click] very clever libertarian marriage equality poster and though I would share it.

P.S.: I will check the link after posting...and checking on the teddy bears!

    1. Yep, the link works (it loads a bunch of extraneous stuff--sorry, but it seems to be the best version of the picture). And the collective noun for teddy bears is indeed quite logical and charming at the same time!

  6. We had 84F today. Blah. Mid-seventies predicted.

The air quality is very poor here tonight. We can smell the smoke from the wildfires as though someone in our neighbourhood had a bonfire going. Our throats and eyes hurt. I never imagined I'd be considering buying my first ever air conditioner because of smoke.

    1. Drat. After midnight the Lake Champlain photo reset. I should have saved a copy of it. But don't worry. There is likely to be another tomorrow. Heh.

  8. I'm sad that the truce between Hamas and Israel only lasted 4 hours. I'm sad that two Israeli soldiers were killed and another kidnapped when the Israelis tried to destroy a tunnel. I'm sad that the Israelis were trying to destroy a tunnel during the truce. I'm sad that Hamas built tunnels. I'm sad that Israel has blockaded Gaza. I'm sad that Hamas has launched rockets. I'm sad that innocent people are caught between warring groups. I'm sad that people seem bent on destroying people who are different than they are. And all over a really small and crappy stretch of land.

  9. Alan! Whoo that's hot! What's your dew point?

    1. Temperatures for today and tomorrow revised downward to 104 degrees; the cooling trend is accelerating! I don't see any mention of a dew (what's that?) point in the newspaper, but the reported humidity (they must mean during the hottest part of the day) is given as 12%. Oh, yes; that's it. Humidity to vary from 30 to 49% overnight, when temperatures are lower and there is more commercial irrigation. Air quality not good, but it could be worse. UV indes = 10.

    2. Ah, here we are at Weather Underground: Current conditions at ten PM in Fresno, CA.
Temperature 91 degrees, dew point 48 degrees, humidity 23%, today's high temperature 109 degrees (guess you can't trust the predictions in the newspaper). But they say yesterday it was 102 degrees, while the newspaper and the thermometer in our car said 108 degrees. Well, we can all agree it was hot

    3. Dew point calculator says for 108 degrees, 12% humidity, dew point = 45 degrees.

  10. 'Ceasefire now'

Writing in the Guardian, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg stated: "It is difficult to deny that Israel's military action appears disproportionate and, combined with the Gaza blockade, is resulting in the collective suffering of the Palestinian people."

He also criticised Hamas, saying it used its tunnels to "terrorise Israeli civilians".

Mr Clegg said even if Israel defeated Hamas, a "similar movement will undoubtedly emerge from the destitution and despair" of Gaza, so people on both sides must "find the courage" to call for an end to military action.

"Modern history teaches that you can't shoot, occupy or besiege your way to lasting security," he added.

"Peace only ever flows from sustained and stubborn engagement."

Labour MP Richard Burden, chairman of the Britain-Palestine all-party parliamentary group, said there must be a renewed drive for peace.

"That means a ceasefire now, and tackling the blockade - which is one of the root causes of the escalation in conflict we have seen over the past weeks," he said.
