  1. Howard is first. You know, I actually saw a Dean for America bumper sticker on a car in the parking lot at Target the other day. Took me back.

  3. Perkins is going bonkers from the lack of another dog to play with. The three remaining humans in our house have dug in their heels pretty hard against bringing another canine into our home. So I guess I am going to take Perkins to the dog park now. Keep putting it off because it's a longer drive than I'd like, and he's not the calmest passenger.

  4. Some folks still have the faith. At this point I am not optimistic about the national Democratic Party nominating a candidate I can in good conscience support come 2016. Well, someday maybe; dum spiro, spero. And now to quit dawdling and get to work on stuff I have been pushing aside. A postprandial nap helped. This morning I murdered beetles in the roses and iris, and did a little touchup pruning. The persimmon trees are almost self-thinning; the twigs and branches that die out each year are easily snapped off, and are easily identified when they don’t produce any leaves. (The persimmon wood is soft and brittle even when living; it is dangerous to trust one’s weight to even a large limb.) Persimmons really need little pruning except to control their size, and seem to be pretty much disease- and pest-free. (If you don’t consider birds that peck the fruits pests.)

  5. I forgot a couple of sightings. Yesterday, at a roadside rest with a pond where we usually feed the ducks and fish, we saw a black-crowned night heron enjoying a nice fresh fish. Today a pair of mallards stopped by for a few minutes to investigate our swimming pool.

    1. Interesting sightings, Alan! Our most unique sighting of the week was watching a Turkey Vulture eating a Skunk on the side of the road. Ew!
