  2. I actually find myself on tenterhooks. I had expected to be doing a happy dance as soon as a shutdown deal was announced. But after so long, I find I can't actually believe it is going to happen until it happens and the bill is on Obama's desk.

  3. Bill--I will also believe it if I see it.

I've been thinking about the old saw that California is where the future happens first. Here, in what was long a reliably Republican state, the GOP not only can't elect a governor, they can't elect a single statewide official. Their share of legislators has declined to the point where they can't even obstruct the people's business; their share of registered voters is less than 29% and continues to fall. (I think 20% is within reach for them, and maybe even 15%; we will see.) Now that the country has had a taste of the GOP obstructionism that Californians had to endure for so long, will the national electoral and legislative results move along the same lines as in California? It wouldn't surprise me.

    1. Alan ~~ Things change. When I was in California in the 1960s it was pretty reliably Democratic. Not to the extent that you describe, but enough that Reagan's election was something of an upset.

I have always said that Illinois is basically a purple state. The Illinois Republican party has largely self-destructed since 2000 (and yes, some analysis ties this to the election of Bush 2), but I don't expect that to continue indefinitely.

  5. Missing Yellow/White Lab-Male
AMANDA AND ROBERT – ORR ROAD

We just moved into 179 Orr road and our dogs wondered off. One came home but the male (who is VERY SWEET but very dumb) has not found his way back to us. Please if you find him he is very kind and if you could call me or email me we would really appreciate it. His name is Gus and he loves people and kids. He is afraid of stairs and will not jump in a car.
    Thank you so much!
    Amanda and Robert

    1. Oops! I meant to add a preamble to the Lost Dog news. :-)

These were the first three notices on today's local news Front Porch Forum (emailed to all who register).
The funny (and really good) thing is that this happens often. In just that order! LOL!

    1. As pleased as I am that the crisis has been averted, I'm still mad that Congress has us set up to go through it all again just after Christmas, not to mention the damage done now to growth, employment and interest rates.

  7. Although some folks might find it surprising, the most recent Congressional follies have me looking back wistfully to Richard Milhous Nixon. Granted that he was a product of his times, and granted that he had a mean streak in him. Granted that he seems to have been carried away by the power associated with the Presidency. But he was a very intelligent man, a skillful politician, and did a number of very good things for the country.
