  1. Is everyone out enjoying this beautiful Sunday afternoon? No one has yet mentioned that Howard is first.

  2. Though no one has yet made the observation, Howard is first.

  3. While some are getting married, we were picking persimmons and harvesting ginko nuts, lazily enjoying a nice breakfast and the newspaper, sleeping in, printing photos of our vacation, passing along things we learned genealogy-wise, and visiting with friends--as well as other stuff. Not in that order.

P.S.: Here's a quip from Jay Leno I found in the newspaper: "What the president should do is put the NSA in charge of the website. They already have all our information. You just put your name in." BTW, evidently the toll-free number works just fine.

  5. Doesn't seem to be a new thread on which to mention that Howard is first.

Interesting article from the Associated Press about the national GOP's woes: US State of the GOP

Particularly interesting to me because it so strongly parallels the situation of the Illinois GOP since 2000. The "rebels" here tended to be more social conservatives than those we would now call tea partiers, but you saw the same refusal to support establishment nominees. As for the third-party threat someone mentioned --- There is a reason the Greens are now an established party in Illinois: in 2008 conservative Republicans cast protest votes for the Green candidate for governor. He was a downstater who opposed gun control, but there was no doubt this was a protest vote rather than someone choosing the anti-gun control candidate.

  7. Angel is very poorly indeed. I don't know how much longer she can hang on. Prayers, Light etc. for much appreciated.

    1. Ensuing. Sorry to hear that she's not doing well. Also grateful that, at least for the moment, none of our pets is at death's door.

    2. My best wishes for Angel. If a smooth passage is the best that can be hoped for, that is my wish.

  8. A whole bunch of posts are scheduled, but the next one listed directly after yesterday's (this one) seems to be scheduled for November Fourth. I didn't want to mess with Listener's settings.
