Grindstone

  1. Howard is first. And this is my last comment before I take the train to Baltimore this evening (for the Balticon science fiction convention.)

  2. Hey all! Wow, when I set that photo to post for today I had no idea how appropos "grindstone" would be just now!

Yesterday was the annual Library Conference, so my work day began much earlier than usual and was three hours longer. Today, on my day off, I worked. I work tomorrow too.

Plus, I have had several birthday gifts to make for our DILs (all three have birthdays in the coming week!), and two important letters to write. The first was my synopsis of the Conference which we each write up for the Trustees (who pay our way). This was a bit challenging this year because our local library bond vote didn't pass. Instead of an expansion we got a barrage of negative comments and a disinformation campaign from a few people in town, on a public forum. Folks said they want just books and no space for community gathering and meetings. So what was the Conference centered on? It was all about what great space libraries are for gathering of community and meeting and broadening of minds. When the keynoter was asked about the climate in DC toward the American Library Association, she admitted that support is "dim" but added that she's encouraged by the great local support libraries enjoy. Heh. So I wrote that up for the Trustees to read. I did so because they never refuted the disinformation for the public's edification and the staff feels a bit unsupported!

My second letter was to the town Development Review Board. There is a meeting tomorrow evening (while I am working) regarding the proposed Dollar General store. As you can imagine, my letter was not in favour. A member of the Review Board offered to read it aloud at the meeting in my stead. It's going to be a highly contentious meeting. It may still be going on when I leave work. Send me good vibes so that if I go I don't get caught in the crossfire.

    Heh.

    1. Did I mention my immediate boss was in a bad mood today and we had a big thunderstorm with impressive lightning and torrential rain while I was driving home? Grindstone!

  3. listener, you simply MUST do something about those DIL's birthdays all coming in the same week--assign them new ones that are more convenient! And don't let the poohbahs get you down.

Today the stitches fell out from where I had the fibroma removed from inside my cheek last week (and the pathology report verified it was only a fibroma, a totally benign growth). Still shocked at the speedy service at the hospital. Primary care doctor, referral, excision and out the door in an hour and a quarter.

I think I mentioned that I received a copy of the passenger list recording my great X3 grandfather's arrival at Philadelphia in 1792. I realized that it must have been written with a quill pen--steel nib pens didn't begin to come into use until about 1830. So of course the widths of the lines were somewhat uneven, there were blotches in some places because of the blotting, and there was bleed-through from the opposite sides of the pages. But it's still quite something to have. Still no evidence of his wife's family, but there is a chance of finding clues in early church records or his probate record, which I definitely will read and copy in October.

The weather has turned cool, but is supposed to warm up in the next few days. No hundred-degree days in the forecast, which is fine with me.

    TTFN

    Alan
