Daffodils by the Wall

  1. Vermont grows a lot of nice things--and people!

We had a bit of rain the past couple of days, but not much.

Had an instrument fixed at the lab today that had been costing me quite a bit of time; I got a public pat on the back for having figured out what the defective part was, so the repairman could bring the right replacement and quickly fix it. To check, he disassembled the old part and it was very obviously worn out/broken. Once repaired the instrument worked very nicely all day long. Nice.

Took the older Camry in for routine maintenance; needed a new power steering pump (under warranty, no charge) and water pump (bearing failing), which latter explains the unusual sound I had been noticing. They couldn't quite get it finished today, so the owner of the repair shop loaned me his pickup for the night. If my memory serves me well, the "small" Toyota pickup he loaned me is about the size of the "big" ones of a decade ago. It was a near thing getting it through the garage door without folding the side view mirrors back. The automatic transmission is nice; standard transmissions seem to be a rarity now. I should be able to handle a standard transmission, I think; once really learned one doesn't forget.

  2. Alan, reminds me. . . . about 15 years ago, I'd picked my sister up from BWI, late, and we were on our way back here. At the first exit on #81, we decided to pull off for a 2 a.m. breakfast. On the ramp, I had my foot off the gas, but hadn't started breaking yet. All the sudden, the van started to screech, rock, and finally pulled to a full stop. Sister said Whathehell just happened. I said Oh nothing much, I jut hit the clutch on the truck I was driving last week while this one was in the garage. The van, an automatic, had a verrrrrrry wide break pedal, lol!

  3. Hanging in there. A touch disappointed that my kids had to be REMINDED to contact me after all of been through the past few weeks.

If I ever actually earn any money, like by having a real, full time job at some point before I die, Daughter doesn't get ANY of it.

    1. But real, full-time jobs don't last. At least that's my experience.

  4. I'm super tired tonight. Going to turn in early.

Early start tomorrow, as I need to help 9 other people mail a package to Ghana, to friends there who are working in the Peace Corps. 105F there, no air conditioning, 100 students in the art class they teach, scanty supplies and sometimes the local taskmasters visit class to inflict corporal punishment on a child who didn't get all his chores completed. But at least they have scorpions. Heh.

    1. Wonderful! The power of hope.

I hope this inspires more hospitals to have chaplains make rounds with the medical team, as Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center does.
