  2. Agree: Ice cream for Howard Dean!!

Better night last night. Mineral ice was a big factor.

Congrats on the weight loss, Alan: never an easy task. Joining you: Rebound after starvation seems to have settled in, so it might BE possible to actually lose. Some. I hope.

  5. UPDATE: Penny's co-worker is in the hospital and from the description -- IV unit and no phone calls -- it sounds like he may be in intensive care. Penny will have to take his 4 - midnight shift tomorrow, but hopes she can get someone else to take her regular 4 - midnight Wednesday shift. The cruncher will be the weekend. At the moment it looks like Penny will have to work from 4 Friday to noon Saturday, midnight Saturday to 8 am Sunday, and 4 - midnight Sunday. The only other person available is the one who works the noon - midnight and 8 - 4 shirts. He might be able to take the 4 - midnight Friday shirt, but it's not clear.

Meanwhile, I'm getting things together for the party I will be throwing at Capricon this weekend on behalf of the Phoenix bid to hold the 2014 North American Science Fiction Conventino.

    1. Ah, I see. I hope Penny gets some real help, and just Eats, SLEEPS and Showers between shifts, for now. Yikes! How does anyone ever get a vacation?

    2. If everybody's healthy, there are just enough people to fill in for the person who's taking time off for a (unpaid) vacation. Penny takes more time off than anyone else, but one reason she didn't want to come with me to Boston was that she didn't want to ask people to cover for yer.

    3. Well, we'll certainly cut anyone some slack when in the hospital. But cutting staffing to close is bound to cause problems for the workers, and for the employer as well.

    4. Further update: Someone else will indeed take Penny's regular 4 to midnight Wednesday shift and the third person will cover the midnight to 8 am shift the sick person would ordinarily do. But it looks like Penny will have that horrendous weekend.

    5. Alan ~~ Since only one person works each shift, adding another person would mean cutting everybody's hours. I don't think Penny would mind working, say, 20 hrs/week rather than 28, but I'm not sure everybody would feel the same way.

    6. Bill, perhaps they need to hire a part-timer to work 8 hours plus fill in. At the Library, there are only three lowly Library Clerks. We also have a sub who has another job but appreciates working evenings and weekends as needed, to help pay her bills and have a little spending money.

    7. Several are part-timers with other jobs, which is part of the problem. The woman who will be working for Penny on Wednesday can only work that day because she is off from her regular job. And before Penny retired from her full-time job 5 years ago she was in no position to fill in here.

It's conceivable that somebody who was retired would be willing to work just one 8-hour or 12-hour shift and then fill in as needed. But how easy it would be to find somebody like that I don't know.

  6. I just need to say this out loud somewhere...

I am soooo relieved that little 5 year old Ethan in Alabama is FREE! He has been my first thought every morning and last thought every night and many times between, being similar in age to my older grands and just two weeks younger than Ally. I don't know how his mother took the tension!

At the same time I am sad that his abductor went off the deep end like that. Another decorated Vietnam Vet who did not get proper care once home. I don't see how the outcome could have been any different than it was. I'd sure want someone to safely storm the bunker if my child was down there.

    Exhaling...!

    1. I hadn't heard about that--will have to look at the news. Thanks for the heads-up, listener.

    2. It's a riveting, sad, tragic story, Alan. Prepare yourself. I am impressed with the restraint of the authorities and the press this past week, especially as the guy had a TV in the bunker.

  7. Seems I didn't ruin myself the way I thought I might have by too much pruning yesterday. Beautiful day here, off to Hayward for court tomorrow (Tuesday).
