Springtime begins today at 7:33am (EDST) !!!

Tiny detail from a huge wall mural inside Main Street Landing in Burlington.
If I can find out who the artist was, I'll post.

puddle--be careful with Goof Off; it is mixed xylenes, and toxic. They used to use lots of xylene in histology labs, but got rid of it; of course the workers were breathing the fumes throughout every working day. Nothing else takes off microscope immersion oil as well, though.

Of course my cancer was not anywhere near as serious as Ally's, but I had to make the same sort of decision too. After chemo, radiation, and surgical treatments (and basic recovery from same), my oncologist felt me out on further treatments (chemo and radiation). There was no question that insurance would pay for it, and no question that other oncologists did it as routine. But both of us felt that watchful waiting was preferable to the likely side effects (which I had previously read up on), and there just wasn't any sign of residual tumor. So far, so good three years later, and I am confident that my quality of life has been better and I am being well monitored. A neighbor of ours similarly drew the line on melanoma treatments, and is unquestionably cured many years later. But sometimes the treatments are clearly necessary, and other times who knows? If there should be a recurrence it ought to be very small compared to what it was at first, and easier to kill.

    And now to bed. TTFN

  3. Alan, thanks for the heads up! Since my furniture stripping days, I've been pretty careful. (Day late, dollar short. . . . ) This was my bĂȘte noire: Methylene chloride. I stripped a bathroom wall (old outside of house/120 years of paint) one winter, and a couple of pieces of furniture. I've never been able to strip furniture since. Even outside.

It's true, I don't even think of Goof Off! as a stripper, but it IS.

  4. I had a phone call from a former coworker yesterday; a reunion of folks from the old workplace is planned! It has been about twenty years since the place foundered, after being taken over (stolen, actually) by a very nasty company. Well, we may be dispersed, but we're still here! And the people who were going to show us yokels how things should be done are long gone. Nice.

  6. I think I CAN has nap--otherwise I no can do me work smartly. :)

FYI--just posted this at Booman, in response to someone complimenting the "Brady and daffodils" photo:

Thanks. Whenever I *really* needed a break from things, I would hit up my mom or brother to spring me to stay for a night at a hotel--that allows dogs. This picture was taken outside the hotel on one such overnight. The visibility of a leash in the picture is a reminder of how recently he actually needed a leash.

Within the last two weeks, my brother sported for a hotel room for me as a belated birthday gift. That was during the time frame when Brady got up multiple times every night because he couldn't get comfortable.

After trying a few times to help him settle in on the floor, I finally gave up, went out to the car to get the blanket we'd put on the back seat for Brady, and spread it on half of the bed. Picked him up and helped him get comfortable on the bed. And we *both* got the most restful night of sleep we'd had in a while.

One more thing--I had only recently started estimating Brady's age as being around 14. With a rescue dog adopted as an adult, it's hard to be all that exact. But today I found a vaccination record from May 3, 1999, and it listed his age at the time as 2. Cripes! He was actually nearly 15! Impressive lifespan for a dog that size...

  9. Nap was much needed. Working on waking up now--have to. Need to run to the pharmacy before heading out to Lenten School session on middle-aged women (mystics from way back.)

  10. Ah Renee, I love that story of you helping Brady be on the hotel bed with you.
You must have been just right for each other.

I could not has nap today, but I sure wanted one.
Slowly catching up on sleep. I'm going to get there.

  11. I second what puddle said!

As Richard Rohr says, institutions are centered on "first half of life" issues, such as format and self-propagation. But the "second half of life" is centered on deeper values, such as relationships and spiritual maturity.
