The reason there was only “mild applause” upon hearing that the footbridge by Jericho's Old Red Mill is going to be rebuilt this year is that the Moderator had told us shortly beforehand that we’re actually not supposed to applaud during the meeting. The fact that there was some applause anyway is testament to how pleased people were with Rep. George Till’s announcement.

  4. Very funny: listener's three comments showed up on the front page comments section, w/o avatars, and with nine o'clock time stamps. There was a comment box there, and I responded, and it said my comment had posted, but it didn't, and isn't here. So I set up a new whole tab, and it isn't here, either. VERY WEIRD SOFTWARE Echo is. . . .

  6. Clear, calm, and cool here this morning. Not quite cool enough for frost.

  7. Interesting to contemplate

The Fix: "Exit polls in both Michigan and Ohio show voters making more than $100,000 per year turning out in much higher numbers this year than they did in 2008. And in both cases, they might well have provided the difference for Romney."

"In 2008, 22 percent of GOP primary voters in Michigan made at least $100,000, and that group made up 21 percent of the electorate in Ohio, according to exit polls. This year, 33 percent of voters in Michigan made that much money, while 30 percent of Ohio voters did. In both cases, the number of wealthy voters grew by about 50 percent -- a pretty stunning increase in that demographic over just a four-year span."

  8. Last excerpts before wending my way to work:

"Rush Limbaugh may be steering the GOP into another Democratic-friendly trap with his consistent bashing of the Chevy Volt.
America’s attempt to to one-up the Prius — with a car that was touted as the saviour of GM for years before Obama was sworn in — became an important symbol for the administration, and thus an immediate whipping boy for Limbaugh. Right-wing pundits and Republicans have followed suit, putting them in the bewildering position of rooting against a product of American engineering and manufacturing.
    This could be a problem."

    =====================
"Stephen Colbert was psyched on Super Tuesday. "It is like the Super Bowl of politics, if the Super Bowl was one team slowly destroying itself." To celebrate the occasion, Colbert painted his face with the team's colors: white. And no game day is complete without a tailgating menu. Colbert served a 10-layer dip, one layer for each Super Tuesday state, including Vermont cheddar and Ohio rust. He also made margaritas, but forgot his blender. Luckily he had a transvaginal ultrasound probe laying around. ...

Here it was in the 60s yesterday and heading there again today. But with a wind advisory that mentions gusts to 50 mph.

Going to be well below freezing in a couple of days, though.

Likely translation: In 2008, well-to-do people didn't see any GOP candidate they particularly cared about. In 2012, they want to make sure it's Romney rather than someone they view as a right-wing demagogue.

Of course, one wonders how Stephen found out about that probe...

  14. Exciting afternoon coming up! Gonna burn ma trash, so I can get water tomorrow. (Trash was busting outta the water room -- now I have some room to maneuver. HAVE to keep it indoors, or the critters take it apart. As it is, the mice do, but they are much less messy than the others.) Stevie made an amazing get away whilst I was getting it all out, including standing long enough to tightrope walk across a two by ten. Once out, he seemed content to just look around at the "real" world, so I let him stay until I was done, I found a towel, wrapped him up and brought in back in. He's sleeping soundly now. Beau was pretty interested in the process, too, lol! More than me, for shur.

  15. Oh, dear ~~

"Statement as of 10:40 AM EST on March 07, 2012

... Enhanced threat for the spread of wildfires this afternoon...

Southwest winds will average between 15 and 20 mph this afternoon
with gusts around 25 mph. The relative humidity will drop to
between 25 and 35 percent across most locations east of the
Allegheny Front. The combination of gusty winds... low relative
humidity and low fuel moisture will enhance the threat for the
    spread of wildfires this afternoon.

Open burning of any type is considered very hazardous this time of
year. Accidental escaped debris Burns are the number one cause of
    wildfires."

Just saw this. Too damn late: I'm NOT hauling all that in. AND, they're nuts: it's soggy as hell out there. I've still got stuff with snow on it. . . . And don't burn near ANY growing things. Ten foot out onto a rock shingle (as the Brits would say).

  18. Accidental escaped debris Burns are the number one cause of wildfires.

It's not how wet the surface of the wood is that concerns people; it's how dry it is inside. Plus the branches up high, where some flaming debris could catch when blown that way by the high winds, don't really have the benefit of the soggy undergrowth.

Don't go getting arrested or anything, okay?
After all, what about Sheriff Chuck?

  19. Very fine story of the day; like the old song goes, "Hello Central, Give Me Heaven:"

  20. No flaming debris that I could detect. Not as much wind as usual, either. Spring burns are restricted till after five on the theory that surface dew will deter fire catching. But as I said, I live in permanent dew, lol! It has its bennies -- the year I came home in August, there'd been a major drought all summer. Till I got to Sugar Grove -- the yellow straw disappeared, and was replaced by green. My own place was awash in Jewel Weed, an exceptionally water loving plant.

  21. Oh, yum! Just put in an all pork meatloaf -- garlic salt, rosemary, oregano, Montreal Steak seasoning, one egg and 2 1/2 pounds ground pork. Was going to make a regular one, but the cost of hamburger was just too much for me.

Starting to smell very very good.

  23. Lucky you that your climate there hasn't changed too much.
It's been pretty strange here and there are so many areas in the country with fire warnings.
That seems rather strange for late Winter. What happens come Summer?

  24. Oh, that's a really sweet story! I think that couple, especially the woman, should be commended. I love how she tailors what she says to what's going on for the caller. It has to be inconvenient at times, and what a selfless thing to do. Very cool.
