  2. Been meaning to get a blender for months (ever since I gave the food processor to Mercy House). Finally did today. After reading the Amazon reviews, decided the only way to get a good modern one, was to drop a hundred or so bucks, so went for an experienced Hamilton Beach (which the original owner lovingly left the advert sticker on). Princessly price of $13, plus shipping which was more, grin. But UPS, so right to the door. Pleased. But then I'm an OLD person, so little things make me happy, lol!

  3. Yanno, if this summer hadn't already been so beastly hot, I might not have begged off of DeanFest; if I hadn't begged off Thankful likely would have gone; if we'd gone likely Denise would have, too. But I know they were both *exhausted* so did I do good or bad?

Rick said they'd had 39 days of over 90ยบ this year. Record, in addition to being the hottest year on record, over all. Every gardener I know from here to Quebec is complaining that all the August flowers have already bloomed, which is going to leave August *where*? Chime in listener. . . .

  4. Ugh, the heat here is awful too. We've even had heat advisories. My grass is getting so wild I'm afraid the neighbors will be giving me the stinkeye every time I go outside. But I got heat exhaustion once when I was a kid. No way do I *ever* want to repeat that experience, and since then I don't do well in heat.

Ah, my tall grass, long may it wave.

  5. I noticed by way of some of the status updates at Facebook that Deanfest is currently underway, so I thought I should swing by here.

To what end, I don't know. Thinking about how that first Deanfest was a lifetime ago.

Brady was still a young, healthy dog. And our kids weren't teenagers.

puddle, I hope my not going didn't influence you, Thankful, and Denise. I just wasn't up for the Las Vegas scene and Netroots Nation, while it does offer some very good things, has come to remind me of a trade show atmosphere.

Have to mine the Sunday salt tomorrow anyway.

  9. Had more to do of dread of more heat. I grew up not all that far from Vegas, so it's never had much charm or interest for me, and the heat has always been worse than even SLC. If we *hadn't* been having such a hellishly hot spring and summer anyways, I don't think the dread would have gotten to me at this level. Aside from which, just following what Thankful's been doing is exhausting! Guess I'm kinda relieved that she didn't go. Girl's got *way* too much on her plate. I *do* sorely miss not seeing Denise (and you). We were talking about doing more mini meets of Deaniacs. Nothing with any kind of official blessings, just "regional" gettogethers. . . .

Renee and Susan ~~ yep. Wonderful to fulla Vitamin D(ean). . . .

    And Renee ~~ this, too, shall pass. . . . ♥

The 7th annual Disability Pride Parade is history!

Weather scared a lot of people away, but then turned out almost perfect. We had a whole series of serious thunderstorms and heavy rain last night and this morning. (Our basement got an inch of water, which hasn't happened for years.) But the rain stopped about the time I left the house. By parade time (11:00 am) we had pleasant temperaturers with overcast skies and a bit of a breeze. Couldn't ask for better parade weather!

And I got to help carry the lead banner this time. That's something I always enjoy. Missed most of the post-parade entertainment because I was sitting the information tent, but that's OK -- I'd seen most of the acts in pervious years.

So now we start planning next year's parade.

  11. My son and and grandson come home from Kenya tomorrow. Guess they've left by now. Bet DC almost seems moderate to them after Nairobi, lol! Kiddle's taking August off before starting job hunting in earnest. (Has done a bit of floating his "concept" around before he left, and is kinda hoping one of the other divisions will pick up on it, and hire him back.)

Bill, the parade sounds like fun. Hope it does some good.

  12. Eek, Puddle. The last of the red hot spenders, eh? LOL Hey, UPS right to the door rocks!

Use your new blender in good health.

  13. Caught some expert on the news saying that this has been the hottest decade on record.

  14. Susan, you mean your grass is still alive? Ours has been brown and sad for a couple of weeks now, maybe three. We don't need to worry about Dad getting heat exhaustion mowing, 'cause there's nothing to mow.

  15. Hi, Donna!

Did you hear about Charlie? Go back to Thursday's thread for what details we have.

  16. Yup, still lush and growing (dang it!). Every couple of days we get a torrential downpour, like monsoon-type, and that's enough to keep the stuff alive and growing well. Too well, if ya ask me. Especially since I'm the one that has to mow it.

My personal opinion is that we waste far too much time, space, money and energy on lawns! Ought to be planting food or something instead of grass. Either that or raising goats.

  17. Hi, Renee! *hug* Those were the days, eh? When we were young and innocent.

    Puddle,

The parade certainly makes a lot of people feel good about themselves, which is one of the main purposes. We aren't yet getting the publicity we'd like to spread the word outside the disability community. Although the fact that this year's Grand Marshall is transgendered as well as disabled seems to have drawn a bit of attention from the LGBT community.

And the idea is spreading geographically. Norway started a Disability Pride Parade a couple of years ago. Today there were parades in San Jose and Davis. And next year Houston is going to rename a parade they've had for 38 years the Disability Pride Parade. So it's slow, but it's happening.

  19. Bill, I'm so glad you're safe! and glad the parade went well. I don't quite know how to say this, but thanks for participating in the parade, for caring about disability rights and making sure we have visibility.

  20. Miserable weather here today, terribly hot and humid. A thunderstorm in the afternoon helped some, cooled things down a bit and cleared out some of the humidity. But, I'm still very grateful for my AC.

Spent the afternoon record shopping. Who knew you could buy LPs through amazon! It is via third party sellers, but it's still under amazon's umbrella. Even found 45s at amazon UK. Pretty amazing. But, hardly productive. *sigh*

  25. We've already had our August blueberries!!!

I'm thinking of getting my Fall mums early and saying to heck with the rest. They last until the frost, so there you are.

  26. We have mostly green but a few STRIPED areas in the back lawn.

  27. Yeah, so, here I was thinking I was the only fuddy duddy in the group who didn't want to hang out in La Vegas. LOL! Being extremely short on funds, owing to the lousy economy, made it a no-choice situation for me anyway.

  28. When you mentioned donna before, Cat, I emailed her. She already knew because she gets the updates. So that's covered.

  29. You did well, there, Bill!

I worked today, but heard that the parade here was sweltering with high humidity. Blah.

My candidate marched, though, and there are some great photos of the event.

  30. Gonna hit the hay early. Couldn't sleep much last night (4 hours' worth, maybe)...just didn't feel tired enough. The salt mine was crazy busy with lots of unusual situations ~ an old book that got dropped off but wasn't a library book; a book the computer said was in, but no one could find; one laptop that wouldn't pick up our wifi; a book & cassette returned in which the book had gotten wet and sat in someone's very hot car (can you say MOLDY!?), and lots more...ALL of which got magically resolved by the end of the day! But it sure took a lot of mental energy to keep up! I realised as I was leaving that I had never even had the time to think about using the rest room. Ha! Wild. So then we went to Racine HQ to work some more on addressing postcards (me) and updating the data base (Hubby). Can't stay awake any longer. Zzzzzzzzzz....click....zzzzzz
