πŸ•―️ This years "Candlemas" Candles!

Candlemas was a bit late this year for listener, who was recovering from surgery on the actual date of February 2nd. Instead, this year's candle dipping took place on March 14th (and 15th and 16th). These candles exist largely thanks to altar candle stubs donated by Grace Episcopal in Lake City, PA, St. Barnabas Episcopal in Norwich, VT, and United Methodist in North Ferrisburgh, VT. ✨πŸ•―️

Candlemas...belatedly

The real Candlemas was on February 2nd, but that was only five days after my surgery.  So I'm hand-dipping candles on March 14th instead, because that's when a friend can join me.
This photo shows last year's batch.

USS Cumberland

On this date in 1862, the tall ship USS Cumberland was sunk by the ironclad CSS Virginia during the battle of Hampton Roads. My great great grandfather was a gunner on that ship.  He happened to be on the far side of the ship when it was strafed, and was able to swim to shore. Otherwise, I would not have existed. A third of the crew perished. The captain boldly refused to lower the flag, which became a rallying event for the Union. I'm gratified to know that my family has always been on the best side of politics.  ~ listener
