That photo out front is the view from Loch Nest (our boat). It feels so good because we’re moored back in the inner bay with the same familiar view we enjoyed for 25+ years at the Sailing School. It feels like coming home.
Today Russia’s Nuclear Deterrence was [Significantly Degraded] [Click] Another partial report of the Ukrainian attacks across Russia. On another note, I remembered seeing a map of languages across the Russian Federation and looked it up again. All across Siberia, from the Urals to the Pacific, there are very large numbers of native Ukrainian speakers. Probably almost all of them who endured the relocations under Stalin have passed away, but their children and grandchildren heard their stories. So there should be millions who would be willing to participate in sabotage, and many more who would be sure to not recognize it or to look away. ----Alan
US veterans agency orders scientists not to publish in journals without clearance
Guardian: Senior officials at the US Department of Veterans Affairs have ordered that VA physicians and scientists not publish in medical journals or speak with the public without first seeking clearance from political appointees of Donald Trump. The article warned that cancelled contracts, layoffs and a planned staff reduction of 80,000 employees in the nation’s largest integrated healthcare system jeopardizes the health of a million veterans seeking help for conditions linked to toxic exposure ... nordy
We’re close to translating animal languages – what happens then? Guardian: The linguistic barrier between species is already looking porous. Last month, Google released DolphinGemma, an AI program to translate dolphins, trained on 40 years of data. In 2013, scientists using an AI algorithm to sort dolphin communication identified a new click in the animals’ interactions with one another, which they recognised as a sound they had previously trained the pod to associate with sargassum seaweed – the first recorded instance of a word passing from one species into another’s native vocabulary. -- nordy
FOLKS! If you have even partly clear skies tonight, go look for the Aurora!! Seriously, it's going to reach all the way to the Gulf Coast and even you could see it, Alan! If you take a 3 or (better) 10 second exposure photo the camera will pick up what your eyes cannot see. Those of us in the north should be able to see something with the naked eye. I'll post some visuals out front!

This is amazing and wonderful!
DeleteThough I wonder if humans are ready to hear what other species think of us. I can't imagine it's good.
