In ancient teeth, clues of human evolution — and perhaps a new species (Wapo): A close examination of 13 teeth discovered in the Ledi-Geraru [Ethiopia] research area, ranging from 2.6 million to 2.8 million years old, adds new fragments of evidence to the increasingly complex story of human origins and potentially reveals an entirely new species, according to research published in the journal Nature. Human evolution has long been visualized as a simple linear timeline, a kind of evolutionary baton race in which one species evolves into another, from apes to modern humans. The new finds reinforced that human evolution was more of a tangled-up bush. For years, paleoanthropologists have been piecing together evidence of a diverse world of hominins — the group that includes modern humans and our close ancestors.
In Trump’s redistricting push, Democrats find a new identity AP: ATLANTA — Fight! Fight! Fight! It’s not just Donald Trump’s mantra anymore. As the Republican president pushes states to redraw their congressional districts to the GOP’s advantage, Democrats have shown they are willing to go beyond words of outrage and use whatever power they do have to win. “For everyone that’s been asking, ‘Where are the Democrats?’ — well, here they are,” said U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Texas. There is no guarantee Democrats can prevent the Republican-powered redistricting, just as Democrats on Capitol Hill have not been able to stop Trump’s moves. But it’s a notable turn for a party that, by its own leaders’ admissions, has honored conventional rules and bypassed bare-knuckled tactics. So far, progressive and establishment Democrats are aligned, uniting what has often been a fragmented opposition since Republicans led by Trump took control of the federal government with their election sweep in November. Leaders on the left say the approach gives them a more effective way to confront him. They can challenge his redistricting ploy with tangible moves as they also push back against the Republicans’ tax and spending law and press the case that he is shredding American democracy. -- nordy

Getting here was an adventure. Between leaving Chicago several hours late due to equipment problems and losing seven hiurs because the Mennominee River was overflowing the tracks, we ended up 12 hourslate into Seattle. And that was after they put us on a bus from Spokane.
The delay threw my schedule off for the first couple of days but otherwise it was a great con.
