As memory serves me, the President and members of Congress feared a revolution or widespread violent strikes if they did not do something to recognize the worker's movement, so rushed through a "labor day" instead of a "workers' day" and settled on a date not emblematic of any commemoration of workers' struggle, beginning in 1894. In addition to the Haymarket Square “Incident” in 1886, there was the Homestead Strike in 1892 [Click], the Pullman Strike in 1894, [Click] the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire in 1911, [Click] the Seattle General Strike in 1919, [Click] and the Wall Street Bombing in 1920. [Click] I am sure there were many other similar incidents, but those come immediately to mind.

Thanks for catching that! How could they leave out the riots especially? Makes you wonder who did the editing.
