And for a break from politics!

  4. Apparently, Bernie has influenced Hillary to say Medicare should be extended to folks from age 55 upward. I doubt she'll actually do it. If she does, it would take about 4 years, at which point I will be 65. As usual, the benefits society comes up with begin or end just in time to not be of help to people my age.

Any link to go with the SS Status Quo comment, Alan?

  5. Speaking of benefits, listener, I was looking at the Social Security web site and saw that we benefitted from a rule that has changed as of April this year. When I reached full normal SS age, Miyoko and I both applied; I suspended my benefits, but she could get half my regular benefits starting then, with no benefit to waiting, on the basis of my quarters. But from this past April if one spouse suspends benefits, the other must also.

    1. Allegedly my SS benefits will start automatically on September 30th, and also allegedly I can verify the details (direct deposit information and tax withholding, for two) online. But I want to make sure of it all in person, and have an appointment on 7/18 to do so. We had some troubles doing SS things not-in-person. I am seriously considering dropping one job and going roughly half-time not long after SS kicks in. The idea is growing on me rather rapidly.

    2. Sweet!!

Isn't there some sort of limit, anyway, on how much one can make for income from work, while retired?

Thanks for making my link clickable. I never even noticed I hadn't! Ha!

    3. As memory serves me, back in the Reagan administration they changed it so that after age 70 there would be no penalty for working while taking Social Security. I think that below age 70 there is a reduction in one's SS. I will look it up. Oh, and SS is subject to income tax, which didn't used to be the case.
